For a decade, SEO meant earning a click. A growing share of buyer questions are now answered inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews — often with no click at all. This is how you make sure the answer is yours.
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of making your content the thing an AI engine quotes when it answers a question.
Classic SEO optimises a page to rank in a list of ten links. AEO optimises a passage to be extracted, trusted and repeated. An answer engine does not hand back ten options — it synthesises one response and, increasingly, names its sources. Your goal shifts from “be on page one” to “be the sentence the model repeats.”
This is not a replacement for SEO. The engines still lean heavily on the open web, and a page that cannot rank generally cannot be cited either. Think of AEO as a second layer on the same foundation: SEO gets you into the source pool, AEO decides whether you are the one quoted from it.
The commercial consequence is what makes this urgent. In a ten-blue-links world, being fourth still earned traffic. In a synthesised answer, being fourth frequently earns nothing at all — the user has their answer and never scrolls.
Four properties, consistently, across every engine we test:
Extractable answers. A passage that answers the question completely, on its own, without the surrounding paragraphs. If a model has to assemble your answer from four scattered sentences, it will find someone who did the assembling already.
Entity clarity. Say plainly who you are, what you do, and where. Models attribute claims to entities they can resolve confidently. Vague positioning is not just weak marketing here — it is a technical failure to be identifiable.
Structure. Clean headings, real FAQ blocks, and schema make passages easy to lift. This is unglamorous and it works.
Corroboration. Models favour claims echoed across independent, reputable sources. One page asserting something is a claim; four sources agreeing is a fact the model will repeat.
The first three you can fix in a fortnight. The fourth takes quarters — which is precisely why it is the defensible one.
Everything easy is easy for your competitors too. Schema, FAQ blocks and tidy headings will be table stakes shortly. What will still be hard in two years is being the brand that independent sources agree about.
That reframes several things that used to sit outside SEO. Reviews are corroboration at scale. Digital PR is corroboration you commission. Directory and listing presence is corroboration you claim. Each one now feeds the same machine.
We saw this play out plainly with Museum of Illusions. The technical work mattered, but the asset that made engines willing to recommend the venue was tens of thousands of independent people rating it — the full teardown is here. No amount of on-page optimisation substitutes for that.
Before writing anything, look at who gets cited in your category. In most Indian service categories the answer is uncomfortable: directories and listicles. GoodFirms, Sortlist, aggregator round-ups, “top 10” posts.
The instinct is to try to outrank them. That is expensive and slow, because a listicle serving ten options is genuinely a better answer to “who are the best X” than any single company's own page.
The cheaper move is to get onto those lists. If the engine trusts four directories in your category, appearing in all four changes what the engine says about you far faster than a year of blogging.
Do both eventually. Start with the one that costs a week rather than a year.
Open every important page with the answer. One self-contained paragraph that fully answers the question the page targets, before any preamble. Then explain, expand, qualify.
Add a real FAQ block with FAQPage schema — using the questions people actually type, in their phrasing, not a marketing paraphrase.
Mark up your organisation, and LocalBusiness data for location pages. Make the entity unambiguous.
Be specific and current. Models distrust vague, dated copy. “Leading provider of innovative solutions” tells an engine nothing it can repeat. A named service, a real number, a stated city does.
Keep facts consistent everywhere. Conflicting addresses, service lists or founding dates across your site, your listings and your profiles actively damage entity confidence.
Then earn citations the slow way — original data, expert quotes, and coverage other sites reference.
Not by rankings, because there is no ranking to read. Measure share of answer.
Fix a set of about twelve prompts in your buyer's language. Run them monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews, logged out. Record four things per prompt: whether you appeared, where in the answer, which sources were cited, and whether the description of you was accurate.
The cited-sources column is the one people skip and the one that tells you what to do next. It is a live map of what the engines trust in your category.
Keep the prompt set identical month to month. Changing the prompts destroys the baseline, and a single month's reading is noise — models vary between runs. The step-by-step method is here.
Week one: run the twelve prompts and record the citation map. You cannot prioritise without knowing who the engines currently trust.
Week two: fix entity clarity and consistency everywhere your business is described — site, listings, profiles. Cheap, fast, and it underpins everything else.
Weeks three and four: rewrite your five highest-intent pages answer-first, with real FAQ blocks and schema.
Then the long game: get onto the sources that already get cited, and build the review and PR corroboration that no competitor can copy quickly.
The order matters. Most brands start at step three because it feels like work, and skip step one — which is the only step that tells you whether steps two to four are aimed at the right target.
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the practice of making your content the passage an AI engine extracts and cites when answering a question. Where SEO optimises a page to rank among ten links, AEO optimises a self-contained passage to be quoted inside a single synthesised answer. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it — a page that cannot rank generally cannot be cited either.
Is AEO different from GEO?
The terms are used almost interchangeably. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) emphasises being the extracted answer; GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) emphasises influencing what generative models produce about you. In practice the work is the same: extractable answers, clear entity data, clean structure and corroboration across independent sources.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Entity clarity and structural fixes can change how engines describe you within weeks. Corroboration — reviews, digital PR, presence on the sources engines already trust — takes quarters, and it is the part competitors cannot copy quickly. Measure share of answer monthly against a fixed prompt set rather than expecting a ranking to move.
Want to know where you stand right now? Our AI Search / AEO practice runs the prompt set across engines monthly and ties share of answer to enquiry volume.
